Who ever thought a simple idea on file sharing by a computer programmer could reach heights unimaginable at that point in history? Although the web had gotten off ground a decade before this phenomenon was released to the masses, no one probably thought to utilize the extensive network to reach out and touch another soul with a little bit of music. Shawn Fanning who invented Napster had that thought and did the unimaginable by leveraging on the internet to make his brainchild work. And boy, did it work.
Although this application is not what it used to be when released a year before the turn of the millennium, it certainly spun a few heads by allowing uttermost parts of the wide world of the web to share music on a gargantuan basis. Alongside the creator of Napster, Sean Parker, who was Fanning's business partner, created an empire rivaling the recording studios and music producers of that time. Music of all genres was happily being passed around between family, friends, acquaintances and strangers. If one was in need of a piece from days of yore, there was a highly likely chance that he or she could find it on this website. Obscure melodies from musicians, singers and origins unheard of made their way into the libraries and were accordingly categorized.
As technology progressed, many a music lover was often flummoxed by the difficulty in preserving music in its age-old form. Media which were commonly used eons back gathered dust on the shelves as their owners could not source adequate players which were as rare as museum pieces. Thanks to the efforts of this man who invented Napster, these pieces thought no longer available could now be disseminated for public and private appreciation. Concert fans could now add to their collection the complete performing history of their favorite singers, bands, groups and orchestras. In other words, there was no end to what one could accomplish based on the simple principle of sharing files.
Since the venture did not contribute a single dime to the pockets of studio owners and song producers, the creator of Napster understandably stepped on quite a few toes and tails. As quick as it spread through the internet, the move of retaliation from this powerful group in the music industry arose. The duo was forced to change the business model from no fee to a subscription-based system, thus spelling its downfall. The move to promote free sharing of music had now become a taboo.
