While driving you may be tempted to take care of other tasks. However, engaging in these distracted tasks may lead to a car crash, which in turn would then raise your auto insurance premium. Here is a list of the most common distracted driving activities which you should avoid.
Messing with your radio
This is quite a common distracted driving activity. A song you can't bare is playing on the stereo so you look down for a quick second in order to switch the channel to something else. One minute later your vehicle is sitting on the curb because you were not paying attention. Rather than detract yourself by messing with the radio, you may want to insert a mix tape in your music player that has songs you enjoy, or see if your automobile has an auxiliary input which you can connect your music player.
Calling And Text Messaging
This is probably a common distracted driving habit amongst all drivers. You must reply to the text to the friend who sent you a text. It's an almost automatic practice to text your friend once they text you. Unfortunately, texting keeps your focus off of the road. This temporary distraction could cause an accident, especially if the automobile ahead of you slams on his or her brakes. Calling may be another messy detraction if your thoughts are more focused on your phone call rather than what is happening on the highway.
Drinking And Eating
It is in your best interest to drink or eat before you enter your car. Not only can eating or drinking take your view off of the highway, but it also gives less control of your wheel since one hand is occupied gripping your food or drink. Try to eat breakfast at your house before leaving for work. If you are on a road trip, you should plan to hit road stops that have locations where you can eat and drink.
Picking Up an Item on the Floor
You can hear something moving around on the floor. You aren't sure if it's your compact disc or a piece of jewelry you misplaced the other day. Instead of pulling your car over you decide to drive while reaching your arm to the floor hoping to find an item. Your eyes are off the road as you want to look at what items or item you have gotten a hold of. If you hear anything rolling around in your automobile, it is in your best interest to pull your car over, and then take a moment to locate the item.
Personal Grooming
It's not the best idea to use your mirror to shave or put on make-up while driving. The mirror is intended to give you an idea of the vehicles or objects that are behind you. Give yourself extra time in the wee hours to handle your grooming so you don't have to concern yourself about it whilst driving.
Talking to the Other Passenger
While it may be suffice to speak to the other passenger in your automobile, it is not a good idea to make eye contact with them whilst driving. Doing this can take your view the road where your attention needs to be focused. Even if in the middle of an argument or having an important discussion, your main priority is to make sure you are focused on the expressway.
While driving while distracted can be commonplace, it's recommended to avoid it completely. Any of these activities could possibly lead to a car accident, and in turn increase your auto insurance premiums.
