Monday 07.11.2011, Day One
The rains come, drenching Merseyside to Kent with a remarkably heavy downpour. Extreme rainfall impacts from Lancashire to Humberside and also from the South West of England to London. Thousands of rail commuters get trapped in the capital, filling the busiest train stations over and above capacity, cut-off from their homes with many living a long way away. Emergency responders are usually asked to respond how they would in this situation.
Then another report comes in; flood waters are causing problems on the M25, M11 and M12, testing the Highways Agency to their limits. As Monday continues, significant pluvial flooding affects thousands of residences with a number of deaths being reported. Evacuation options are taken into consideration by the Emergency Services, concentrating on residential houses, mobile homes sites, and hospitals. The Health Service has their resilience tested across the nation, when a national power blackout takes place.
By early afternoon, heavy down pours are subsiding across central England, but as the end of the day approaches it all starts for Wales. Ground level flooding is coupled with simulated power loss for 15,000 properties, and the Welsh Emergency Response is put through its paces. At the end of the day; over 45,000 simulated people have been impacted by the simulated flooding, which is just the beginning.
Day 2 - Tuesday the 7th of November, 2011
Continuing straight on from the surface water flooding of Day One, rivers across the country burst their banks. Near complete ground saturation is reported to the Emergency Responders, and river catchments are said to be near capacity. Squads are asked to respond against a likely storm surge event to strike the East coast later in the week (this actually happened in the 1950s, leading to billions of pounds worth of damage and injuring/killing many people).
Five hundred people are evacuated from a train in Oxfordshire, with more evacuated from Rhayader within Wales, and three bridges are reported harmed within Shropshire. The road network continues to be impacted by flooding, which also begin to threaten water and food supplies. Local Authorities consider establishing rest centres in likely locations. By the end of Tuesday, 45,000 simulated homes as well as over 120,000 simulated people are affected by the simulated floods.
Wednesday 09/11/2011, Day Three
70 deaths and over 100 missing people need to be dealt with. Health Trusts need to deal with difficulties such as a reduced work force and mounting public pressure. Fears about the structural strength of a number of dams and reservoirs are raised, mass evacuations become essential. Then a dam breaks in Derbyshire, massive fatalities as well as polluted water floods through the Chesterfield region as an explosion is caused at an iron works. Fears regarding the imminent threat of storm surge across the East coast sends people fleeing inland and results in enormous over-crowding on the roads.
60,000 simulated houses flooded, 1,000 simulated casualties, 80 simulated deaths as well as 20,000 simulated people made homeless from the simulated floods.
Day 4 - Thursday 08/11/2011
The storm hits, the East coast is laid waste, Humber Estuary floods as does the Bridlington and Lincolnshire areas. A prison holding 1,000 prisoners is flooded, dangerous chemical substances leak into flood waters, power cuts impact thousands of homes (which includes hospitals), destruction of farms and fuel supplies are threatened.
200,000 simulated houses and 450,000 simulated people have been endangered by the simulated flooding towards the end of Thursday.
Can this really take place?
If the recent flooding events which impacted numerous locations around the world already this year are anything to go by, then it is easy to think this scenario is within the realms of likelihood. Certainly, we never truly know exactly what Mother Nature has in store for all of us. The project was not made to test exactly how likely the situation is, but how our infrastructure would endure this kind of occurrence. One thing is sure however, in this time of uncertainty, it is imperative that people have adequate flood insurance in position to keep our properties protected.
If you are living in an area that is in danger from flooding, you may discover that it is tough to acquire flood home insurance at an affordable rate. There are a variety of specialist insurers who believe in supplying competitive estimates regarding house flooding insurance conveniently on the internet, but they would require a bit of research to locate. Even if you are at a medium to high risk of flooding, you can rest confident that you will discover the flood risk insurance coverage you will need with a non-standard insurance company.
